VINEYARD & WINEMAKING

The continental cool climate sub-region of Frankland River sits within the north west corner of the Great Southern wine region (its latitude 34°39’S). The Riversdale vineyard, planted in 1997 on deep gravel over clay soils, on a north-south orientation, is located 7kms north west of the Frankland River township.

‘The Philip Adrian’ is Singlefile’s flagship red wine where every measure is taken to ensure only the best fruit and barrels are selected. This wine will only be made in exceptional vintages.

The wine is 100% cabernet sauvignon (Houghton clones), the fruit picked and sorted in late March 2020. It was cold soaked in a small fermenter for two days with minimum pump overs before undergoing an extended and gentle maceration lasting for four weeks. Forty percent of the wine was matured in new Bordeaux oak barriques for fifteen months. The balance went to one-year-old (30%) and two-year-old (30%) Bordeaux barriques (for the same period).

The wine was bottled on 22 December 2021 and bottle aged before release.

THE WINE

The wine displays aromas of dark red berry fruit and mocha characters. The palate is vibrant with cassis fruit and earthy undertones. It has a soft and supple mouth feel with fine grain tannins and good length of flavour.

This wine is a stunner. There is some powerful, vibrant red fruit, but it’s balanced by the oak and already it’s silky smooth. Don’t wait for a special occasion, opening a bottle of this stand out Cabernet Sauvignon is the occasion. It shows off the best of the Frankland River region and will happily age for quite a while. Call us hasty jumping into it now but our second bottle will enjoy a long rest in the cellar.

Strikingly fragrant bouquet- with ripened gooseberries and a sprinkling of cardamom. The palate entry is opulent yet bold with full-bodied flavours, finely grained, earthy textural components, reminiscent of satsuma plum and elderberry. And did I taste a whisper of smoke and light maple syrup entwining with the dark, dry fruit? An elegant, sophisticated wine: perfectly balanced to yield mouth-watering delight. One of my favourites- for special occasions, or to warm me up on those cold Great Southern winter nights.

The 2017 Philip Adrian is the much-awaited new vintage in this outstanding and award-winning series of superb Cabernet Sauvignons from Singlefile – and boy is it is well worth the wait. This is a beautifully made, elegant wine, with silky smooth texture, medium body and long length on the palate. Luscious berry notes are mixed with hints of licorice, cedar and tobacco leaf, ending with a fine dry finish. Tasted in 2020 I can only imagine how great this wine will taste with 10 – 30 years of cellar age on it. Produced in very limited quantities this is a must buy for any lover of Cabernet Sauvignon.
