VINEYARD & WINEMAKING

Frankland River is arguably the premier shiraz growing sub-region of Western Australia and is recognised for its distinctive black fruit and black pepper characters. Shiraz from the Riversdale vineyard, planted in 1997 and one of the few north-facing sites, delivers the quintessential characteristics expected of fine Frankland River shiraz fruit.

The winter months saw above average rainfall with spring being reasonably dry. Summer was mild and dry with good, even temperatures. This provided excellent growing conditions which resulted in exceptional quality juicy, and a fresh and vibrant shiraz.

After picking and sorting, fermentation took place in closed fermenters, and maceration was gentle lasting fifteen days with minimal pump-over interventions. The wine was then aged in medium toast French oak barriques for eleven months. Post bottling, this wine was aged further to allow to settle, integrate and develop prior to release.

THE WINE

This wine displays vibrant blackberries, currants, and subtle spicy aromas. The palate displays flavours of dark fruits, spice and savouriness which persist through to a long, dry finish. It is a medium bodied, cool climate style shiraz of both power and complexity, with silky tannins and a refined delicacy. A shiraz to be enjoyed with fine food and friends.

This Shiraz I have found is a deeply structured, medium-bodied wine that starts to meld together with a roundness complexity without being overripe.

A fine example of cool climate Shiraz. The aroma is intoxicating that moulds well into the dark fruit and spice on the palate. Maybe still a little young but will only improve. Was well matched to salmon fillet. Very good wine.

Sheryl makes the best lasagne in the world; big, full-bodied, no-nonsense. It deserves a red that is made to similar parameters but hell, it’s lasagne, you’re not going to snap open a $100 red for lasagne no matter how good it is. Which brings us to the single vineyard shiraz from Frankland, a big, full-bodied, no-nonsense wine that the folk from Singlefile get into when the customers have gone home. The purists speak of blackberry, pepper and spice with hints of dark cocoa. Forget that. It tastes like a big, cool climate Australian red should: Whammo.

Plunge into this lovely cool climate shiraz with its intoxicating, deep aromas of cassis, licorice and warm spice. The fresh, upfront acidity is complemented by lingering, juicy ripe fruit and mellow tannins. A lovely drop for socially distanced festivities now and will reward medium term cellaring. A suprisingly excellent match with Asian food such as Wagyu Beef or Spicy Duck.

This Shiraz is like caramel on my tongue. First taste sitting on the buffalo grass under the trees out the back on a windy Perth arvo. I get a crispness that reminds me of peppermint, I’m no expert but it is a very easy drop to enjoy that doesn’t intrude but accompanies your experience. Received in a summer reds pack, I truly believe the team have put together a thoughtful set of 6 reds. I’d like to thank them for it!

The 2019 Vintage is pretty damn good, the only thing that could improve it is a couple of years in the cellar, if you can wait that long! Intense, inky violet and crimson hues instantly remind me of exotic, dark, prized orchids - sensual, yet delicate and striking. Pepper and clove feature in a slightly earthy, and spice driven palate, with rich, juicy dark fruits, and silky smooth tannins. There is a lot going on in this complex wine, yet it’s PERFECTLY balanced! With medium body, and medium acidity, you could enjoy this with all manner of foods, but I recommend letting this wine shine all on its own, alongside a cozy fire.

I recently had the pleasure of tasting the 2019 vintage which was a mature, full bodied red that literally hangs on the glass. It was peppery and spicy, smooth and very drinkable. It will be interesting to see how it ages in 5-10 years (if you can wait that long).

Another outstanding drop from Singlefile! Extremely balanced Shiraz, displaying juicy berry and subtle spices makes for a bottle you wish you had two of. Well I did anyways!! Exceptional to drink with lovely mild blue cheese and soft buttery brie overlooking beautiful Flinders Bay when there is a touch of cool in the air. I can see why James rated this superb wine so highly, with its elegant, graceful profile and ruby red colour. A delight from the start to finish…

This is your perfect, well-rounded peppery Shiraz. Smooth (but not too smooth) and well balanced with enough body for drinking with, or even before food. Love it!

Singlefile Single Vineyard Franklin River Syrah 2023 (Great Southern, Western Australia 🇦🇺).

The fruit 🍇 is from the Riversdale vineyard in the Franklin River sub-region of the Great Southern GI. The vineyard was planted in 1997.

Ageing took place in French 🇫🇷 oak barrique for eleven month, with further ageing in bottle prior to release.

Medium purple colour. The nose is alluring, with aromas of fruit compote, cherries 🍒, cinnamon, and cardamom. There is tremendous depth and elegance on the palate. The flavours fan out with great energy. Medium bodied with velvety tannins adding lovely texture. It displays flavours of red plums, blueberries 🫐, dark cherries 🍒, and white pepper. The finish is elongated. Complex wine that will richly reward 10-20 years ageing. More Rhone in style and structure than warm climate Australian Shiraz.

A superb wine 🍷.

Very light shiraz, typical of cold climates. cherries, raspberries and cinnamon upfront with a smooth finish. Drunk on a cold winter night alongside a mediterranean tasting menu. Paired best with slow cooked lamb and charred vegetables. Very drinkable today but would be even more delicious after a few years in the cellar.
