VINEYARD & WINEMAKING

The Southern Rhône region of Châteauneuf du Pape is a significant wine region of the world and Singlefile’s Clément V is our salute to the role this “Avignon Pope” played in establishing the viticulture and wine style of this region. This wine is a blend of the classic Châteauneuf du Pape varieties of grenache, syrah (Rhône clones 877 and 470 originally from Hermitage) and mataro (also known as mourvèdre).

All three of these varieties are grown in the Riversdale Vineyard, Frankland River. The 2023 fruit was picked on 21 and 24 April 2023, with varietal batches kept separate throughout. The fruit was sorted and cold soaked in small fermenters for two days, before undergoing an extended and gentle maceration.

Approximately twenty five percent of the wine was matured in new oak barriques, the balance going to two and three-year-old barriques for eleven months before the varietal blending, settling and preparation for bottling.

THE WINE

The 2023 vintage of the Clément V is mataro (56%), shiraz (34%) and grenache (10%). The wine has bright, perfumed aromatics of violets, red berries, plum and spices with subtle, savoury elements. The palate is plush, with a smoothly textured mouth feel, subtle savoury undertones and fine-grained, chewy tannins. A medium bodied red wine that is well suited to be enjoyed with great food.

Magnificent wine that is full of flavour with nice oak but not too heavy and suits drinking in Perth's warmer climate perfectly.

I recently opened a back vintage of this wine - a 2014 that I received as part of my club membership. A fantastic spice taste fills the mouth before swallowing. I would even suggest a Cardamon heightened finish with a softening of berries with citrus and spice. The sense of the wines aromas and blending flavours is just so satisfying!

This is a young wine, excellent colour and nose and a very smooth initial mouth feel. The tannins then kicked in and I found these detracted. I suspect a year or two in the bottle will settle the wine and make it an excellent medium bodied wine.

A delicious lighter style wine, very easy drinking with, or without food. Beautifully balanced flavours of cherries and currents; slightly sweet and savoury flavour. Clean finish. Could try to cellar this wine, but I wouldn’t be able to resist.

This is one my favorite reds - a great blend that is medium bodied and not too heavy. It’s so easy to drink and smooth with a clean finish. Hard to stop at just a glass or two. A winner for sure!

This wine is becoming a wine of choice, a little young, but incredibly delicious. I believe that the portion of this wine maturing in barrels has a lot to do with this. A top wine as it is, a winner if you can wait!

Ker-pow!. Lithe, supple yet underpinned by restrained power. Like LeBron James prowling down the court - It filled me with joy vibes. Five most excellent out of five.

This hearty red can simply only be described as delicious. It was full bodied, strong in flavour and we will definitely be having it again!

Super tight and acidic on opening; half an hour in the glass helped it settle down. This one’s all about the softer spices from a cool climate SGM: velvety chocolate, cardamom and cinnamon overtake the dark fruits, but the acid comes raging back on the finish. Way too early for me; might be worth a look in 5+ years?

This is a beautiful ruby coloured number was perfect with lamb shanks and mashed potato. I loved watching the legs drip down my glass after each sip. It has lovely balance of fruit and oak.

Loving a good blend and being partial to the traditional GSM, this is the next level for my palate. My wife loved smooth, fruity reds and this has plenty of all. Big berry mixed with Xmas pudding. Lovely notes of cinnamon, all spice and chocolate leather. We had the 2016 Clement V with duck and matched perfectly. Long flavours. Smooth long depth. Wish we had two bottles

Thinking I was buying a French style Crement, I was pleasantly surprised by this GSM or as the French call it a Mourverde. The nose and colour is of rich cherries with a note of spice. The front of the palate is well rounded and a finish is smooth with lingering sweet strawberries. A great easy drinking style which will go with pizza or red meats.

This red reminds me of those days spent next to a river in rural Victoria soaking up the sun with my best friend, laughing with a full spread picnic to enjoy…good times with little cares but to live a good life. A lovely drop

Definitely always a 5 star - this complex red isn’t for the faint hearted. With a deep rich flavour this GSM brings the best of each of the varietals. A real ‘food wine’ that makes every meal a special occasion

This Clement V is a lovely red for a summers day. Pepper and rose notes on the nose that smooth into a mellow currant flavour. Just delicious!

Upon opening the bottle I instantly thought it smelt of cherry! My initial taste I thought the wine was quite sweet, but as you continue to drink it develops into a lovely easy drinking red! Medium bodied, fruity at the start and the finish is spicy and dry! Delicious drop, will definitely recommend.

This is an absolutely gorgeous wine! From the moment you throw your nose in the glass, the beautiful floral perfume coupled with bright, plush fruits is simply a delight. On the palate the wine is delightfully smooth, the tannins are delicate, the fruit profile is fresh and complimented by lovely notes of spice. This is a great food wine, and one I imagine would be a crowd pleaser!

A nice wine but would benefit from a few years in the cellar to take away some of the crispness. Otherwise a very safe option at an affordable price.

A bright light purple colour. The nose offers strong dark stonefruit aromas. There is a mass of rich fresh plummy flavour with a fine but firm tannic backing. Still very young this has the potential to improve over the next few years.
